Twin eagles and roses on the abdomen
Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person's lower abdomen showing a large black and grey tattoo of two eagles with outstretched wings, their heads meeting around the navel. Two shaded roses sit beneath the birds, and a faint moth-like motif is partly visible above the black crop top. The bold outlines, solid black areas and grey shading give the piece a classic traditional look.

Dear Ruth, the weather turned on Tuesday and has not turned back since, so I am writing this on the back of a fish ticket with the pencil stub you gave me, which is the only thing aboard that stays dry. We are out past the Dogger in grey water, hauling the same ground three times a day because Skipper Abel says the cod are sulking and he will not be the first to blink.

Something happened on Thursday I want to tell you about. A moth came aboard in the lee of the wheelhouse, a big grey thing with feathered antennae, and it settled on the tea tin and would not be shifted. Nobody touched it. Old Bram said it was a drowned man's soul waiting for a berth, which is the sort of thing he says after his cough syrup. By morning it had gone, and the net came up with two monkfish and a rope of kelp curled like a wreath, and Abel laughed out loud for the first time since Harwich.
The wheelhouse door has two brass eagles screwed to it, one either side of the handle, their beaks nearly touching over the latch. My father fitted them the year I was born, and they have been knocking their heads together in every gale since. Last night I took the door off its hinges to rub it down and found the eagles had worked loose. Abel held one in each hand and looked at them a long while. Then he said we would mend them tomorrow, if the sea allowed, and not before.
Write back soon. Tell Mum the parcel of socks arrived and that I am wearing the grey pair, which are the only ones I trust.
Love, Jess
