Owl with spread wings across the chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A front-facing owl with spread wings is drawn in black outline across the chest and upper abdomen, with fine hatching on the feathers and face. A second tattoo of two feathers sits on the side of the hip. The image is black and white, and the ink is solid black with no colour.

The owl came back to the roof of Calder Tower the week the lifts were switched off for good, and Ruth Pollard was the only one on the eleventh floor who noticed it sitting on the parapet with its wings held out like a coat being shaken dry.

Nobody else looked up. The council men came with their netting and their clipboards, and the tenants on the south side wanted the bird gone before the children started walking home past the bins. Ruth said nothing to them. She had lived in the block since it was built, long enough to know that the owl had been coming to that ledge since before the cladding went on, and that it always left before the first frost.
On the last evening of October she climbed the forty-two stairs with a flask of tea she did not drink and a torch she did not need. The owl was there, its face turned towards her with that flat, unbothered stare, and its wings open wide enough to cover the whole stone lip of the roof. She sat down on the cold step beside the hatch and waited. Below, a single window lit up, then another, as the estate woke into its evening noise.
When the owl finally lifted, it did not go over the car park the way the council men had feared. It rose straight up past the aerial, wings barely moving, and hung above her for a long moment before turning away over the railway line. Ruth picked up the feather it left on the step, grey and barred and soft at the edges, and tucked it into the pocket of her overall. Next morning she told the man from housing that the roof was clear. It was, more or less.
