Feathered wing tattoo on side of torso
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large wing made of layered feathers is tattooed on the side of a torso, sweeping from the ribs down towards the waistband of light blue jeans. The feathers are rendered in fine hatched and cross-hatched linework with grey shading, and dark ink dots and splatter spread outwards around the wing. The composition is a single close view of the skin with a white garment pulled up at the top edge of the frame.

The snow has been coming sideways since Tuesday, and the guests at the Hollin Gate have stopped asking when the road will open. You stand at the back bar with a tea towel over your shoulder, counting the pewter tankards a second time, because counting is what your hands do when the rest of you is waiting.

The stranger came in at dusk with a long bundle wrapped in oilcloth under his arm. He ordered brandy he didn't drink and asked for the room over the stable, the one with the broken shutter. Nobody in the valley had ever seen a feather that size. When he unwrapped it by the fire, the quills were grey as slate and every barb had been drawn by hand, hatched line after line until the firelight seemed to slide off them.
He wanted the wing carried over the pass before the thaw. The pay was a bed, a meal, and a promise that you would not pull a single feather. You agreed, because the weather had made fools of everyone. In the night the shutter banged, and you climbed the ladder to find ink flung across the boards in dark spatters, dots scattered out from the wing like the snow driving against the glass.
By morning the room was empty, the oilcloth folded neatly on the bed, and one feather lay on the sill with its tip still wet. You pinned it above the bar. When the road opens in spring, ask the carriers who cross the pass whether a winged man ever came through, and watch how their eyes go to the dark specks on your sleeve.
