Twin spiky figures with crossed bones and red drop

Mixed · Flash

A black ink drawing of two tall, thin, spiky figures facing each other, with arms raised and legs splayed. Between them sits a small crossed-bones motif and a single red teardrop shape. The linework is loose and scratchy, with dense hatching on the bodies and fine strokes on the limbs, and the black ink is contrasted with one area of red.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The twins at Gallow Cross had never once stood apart, and the village kept its doors bolted on the nights they walked the lane between the chapel and the tithe barn. Old Mercy Pell swore they were not twins at all but a pair of thorn-hedges that had grown tall enough to take shape, and that a hedge will remember every hand that ever pruned it. Her grandson Tobias laughed until he was sent to fetch the lamp oil himself.

On the night of the bone fire he went up the lane alone, carrying the cracked lantern and a sack of marrow bones for the pyre. The two figures stood in the mist at the crossroads, arms raised like men surrendering or men asking for something, their legs splayed in the wet grass. Between their feet lay a crossed pair of bones, and above them, the single red drop that had appeared on the stone after the carter's accident, bright as a cherry in the rain.

Tobias set the sack down and did not run. He knelt, struck a match, and tilted the lantern so the light fell on the nearer figure's hatched and furrowed trunk. The lines there shifted when he looked away and settled when he looked back, like a cable of wet rope being hauled in. He pressed a bone into the mud. The far figure leaned, slowly, the way a gate swings on its own hinge.

He walked home by the long road that night. In the morning the bones had gone, and in their place the two spiked shapes stood at the chapel door, arms lowered now, facing each other as if they had been talking all along.
