Twin sugar skulls with crowns on calves

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

Two sugar skulls each wear a grey crown with jewel details. The left skull has heart-shaped eye sockets holding pink flowers, while the right has teal-rimmed eyes with red centres. Bold black outlines frame patterned filigree, with teal, green, yellow and pink colour on the skulls and a pale green backdrop behind them.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer the stove, the lamps only hold their colour till midnight. You've seen the pair of painted skulls above the coconut shy, the ones with grey crowns and fleur-de-lis spiking up like iron railings? Those were Ada and Lune Harrow, twins who ran the hook-a-duck stall for forty summers and never once agreed on the time of day.

Ada wanted the heart-eyed skull, the one with pink blossom growing out of its sockets, because she believed a fair should be kind to the folk who walk through it. Lune wanted red glowing behind her teal rings, because she said the fair owed everybody a small fright for their pennies. Every September they argued over the crown they'd won off a drowned bandmaster's cart, a tin thing with jewels glued on by a boy who'd lost a tooth in the dust.

The autumn the fair pulled out of Hartlepool, the crown went missing. They searched every caravan and every fold of canvas. Ada found it at last tucked inside Lune's coat, polished bright, with a note pinned to it: Share it, or I'll wear it to my grave. They wore it in turns after that, one on Monday and the other on Tuesday, and the lamps never lost their colour.

So when you walk past the coconut shy tonight, look at the skulls. They have stood side by side on that board ever since, and the paint has faded only where the two of them rubbed their sleeves against it, back and forth, passing the crown along.
