Twin thigh tattoos of women with peonies and an owl
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows the upper thighs of a person wearing a light blue garment, with a tattoo on each leg. The left tattoo shows a woman's face in profile beside a cluster of peony flowers, and the right shows a woman whose head is partly covered by an owl, with roses, leaves and feathers below. The work uses black and grey ink with soft shading and fine detail in the petals and feathers, set against pale bedding.

Dear Nell,

The peonies by the orchard wall finished in July, but Mum never cut the heads off, and now they've gone brown and papery like old envelopes. I walked the rows this morning with the dog. The early Victorias are down already and the wasps have found every windfall. Under the damson tree there were eleven owl pellets, which I think means the barn owl has settled for good, the one you named Mrs Pounds when we were small.
You'll laugh, but I went to Pennick's on Thursday to ask Joe about the hives, and he showed me the drawing he's kept pinned above the till since you left. The woman with the owl's head, all ink and feathers, roses curling up from the bottom like smoke. He said the man who did it at the fair in Hereford worked on it for one long afternoon and wouldn't take money for the last hour. I told Joe it looked like you on a bad day, which was unkind, and he said that was rather the point.
I didn't tell him the feather I found on the wall last week was the same brown-grey as those leaves. I've put it in the tin with the postcards from Aunt Bea, next to the ticket stub from the train you took to London. Nobody else will open that tin, so it's safe enough.
The fruit will be ready to pick by the time this reaches you, so come home for it if you can. I'll leave the ladder against the Bramley tree and the back gate unlatched, and if you're not here by Saturday I'll start without you.
Love, Ada
