Two birds and a heart on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two small black birds perched side by side on a curling branch, with a tiny outlined heart floating above them. The linework is clean and thin, with solid black fill on the birds and a simple scroll on the branch. The design is black ink only and sits centred at the back of the neck against plain pale skin, with the top of the head and hair cropped at the top of the frame.

The lift broke again the week the sparrows came, so Ada Penrose carried her shopping up fourteen flights and talked to the birds on every landing. There were two of them. They had made a nest in the gap above the window on the ninth floor, where the cladding had come away from the brick, and they quarrelled all day about straw.

Her gran used to say that two birds who share a branch will never be lonely, and that a heart rises up over them whenever they are fond of one another. Ada did not believe her gran, but she believed the birds. The cock sat on the railing each morning and the hen came out to him, and when the council men came to cut back the ivy, the pair went round and round the car park until the men gave up and drove off.
One February the hen did not come. Ada waited three days. The cock sat on the rail and called at the empty gap, and on the fourth morning Ada fetched a coat hanger from the cupboard, bent it into a curling branch with her pliers and her teeth, and wired it to the railing where the birds could see it. She cut a heart from a milk carton and hung it above.
The hen came back that afternoon, from wherever she had been, and settled on the wire as though she had always meant to. Ada put the kettle on and watched from the window. By dusk the two of them were side by side on the bent hanger, and the lights of the estate came on one flat at a time.
