Infinity symbol with leaves on the neck

Fine line · Neck · Colour · Photo

A small infinity symbol drawn in fine dark linework is entwined with a sprig of leaves outlined in blue ink. The tattoo sits centrally on the back of the neck, below the hairline, with the hair tied up in a bun. Soft, natural lighting and a shallow focus keep the background blurred and the tattoo as the clear focus.

The vine came up through the cracks in the front steps of Pellow's Boarding House the spring after Walter drowned, and nobody had planted it. Maud Pellow pulled it twice with her bare hands and twice it came back, its leaves no longer green but a dark, bruised blue, as if the sea had got into the sap. She decided it was a sign and let it be.

Her lodger that summer was a boy named Tobias Venn, sixteen, who sat on the wall each evening watching the lighthouse blink and talking of the ships that would take him away. He was going on the Tuesday boat. Maud took a length of the vine, bent it into a figure of eight, and twisted the ends together until the loop had no beginning and no end. 'Keep that in your pocket,' she said. 'Whatever road you take, it will bring you back to the same place.' He laughed and took it anyway, because the vine was warm from the sun and she was looking at him the way his mother used to.

He sailed on the Tuesday. He sent postcards from Valparaiso, Cape Town and a port whose name Maud could never say, each one smudged with salt. Years passed. The vine grew over the boarding house sign until the letters could no longer be read, and she let that go too.

On a grey morning in October a man in a sea-stained coat came up the steps with a battered tin in his hands. He opened it. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, was the loop of dried vine, its leaves still blue where he had kept touching them. 'Every port I got lost in,' Tobias said, 'I followed this back up the coast.' Maud looked at the vine climbing the doorframe behind her and said nothing, because the answer was obvious and he was already coming in out of the rain.
