Two birds and blossom in a dotted circle
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo shows two small songbirds perched on branches among five-petalled blossoms and buds, framed by a dotted border. The linework is fine and the birds and petals are filled with stippling and light hatching to suggest shading. The image is black and grey, shot in close, straight-on view against a plain pale arm and dark background.

The cherry tree in the middle of Calder Court was planted the spring the blocks were opened, and for thirty years it flowered only in the years it chose to. Nobody on the estate could say why. Mrs Ede on the fourth floor said it was because the lift shaft blocked the sun on the east side, so the tree had to lean, and leaning takes a long time.

Two birds lived in it, a cock and a hen, both the brown of wet bricks with a dark bar across the wing. They quarrelled every morning about the high branch, the one that caught the sun first above the sixth floor. The hen said the cock was lazy and sat too low. The cock said the hen sang too loudly for a courtyard with only one tree to share.
One spring the blossom came out in a single night, five petals to each flower, and the birds were too busy fighting to notice. A wind came up the stairwell and stripped half of it into the bins. In the morning the cock flew to the top of the highest block to see what the wind had done, and he came back with nothing but the news that the whole estate was white with petals.
Mrs Ede put crusts on her windowsill that day, as she always did, and watched the birds come down together onto the lowest branch to eat. Neither would take the high one, and neither would leave the other alone on it. So they sat side by side among the flowers, facing the wall, and by the next week the tree was in leaf and the argument was over.
