Small black birds on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised arm shows a cluster of small black birds in flight across the inner wrist, with the rest of the composition filled by a hand gripping the wrist and a dark camera held up in front. The linework is thin and solid with little shading, and the birds vary slightly in angle and size. The image is almost entirely muted tones of grey, beige and black, with only small touches of pink on the fingernails.

Mrs Ellery found the camera on the third grey morning, wedged behind the radiator in Room Four. She carried it down to the breakfast room as if it might still go off. Guests left three things behind at Harbour View: umbrellas, reading glasses, and the people they had arrived with.

The photographer had booked a fortnight in October and paid in coins from a tin. The register said Ines Varga in blue biro, though she signed it with a small looping mark like a swallow in flight. Each dusk she walked to the end of the pier and lifted the camera above her head, waiting for the starlings to come in off the marsh. Pearl had watched from the landing window more than once, the birds breaking into a black ribbon, folding back on themselves, the lens tilted up to catch them.

On the last evening the room was empty and the card was still in the camera. Pearl pressed the button on the back and the pictures came up one by one: shingle, rain, the chipped blue railing, and then a run of frames where the birds were only smudges against a white sky. Twelve of them, then nine, then four, each one a little further off than the last. The final frame had no birds at all, only the pier light coming on.

Pearl set the camera on the breakfast table beside the marmalade and went to fetch the post. Under the mat was a postcard addressed to Room Four, written in pencil: the birds went south on the Tuesday, you were right about the light. She propped it against the teapot, where anyone coming down for breakfast would see it first.
