Matching small heart tattoos on held hands
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two arms are raised with the hands clasped, showing a small outlined heart on each wrist or forearm. Fine, even linework is used for the hearts, and a partly visible script word sits on an upper arm, with a larger dark design on the lower forearm at the lower right. The photograph is monochrome, with soft light and a plain pale background.

The gym at Holmfield smelled of floor polish and the same orange squash as 1994. I had been put on the table by the urn with the name badges, which meant I saw everyone arrive before they saw me. Most people hesitated at the door. Dev Sandhu didn't. He came straight across the hall with Carol Hebden's hand in his, and the whole room made the noise a room makes when it has decided to be pleased.

Carol and Dev had sat at the back of Mr Pryce's chemistry lab for two years without speaking. Then, in the summer of Year Eleven, they were sent to the head's office for the same offence, a stolen Bunsen burner, and came out grinning. I was the one with the biro. I drew hearts on the inside covers of their exercise books, each one outlined in a single unbroken line because I had been practising on the back of my own hand during maths. Carol said I ought to do it properly one day. I told her that was a daft idea. She said I was daft. That was the last time I saw either of them until tonight.
Now Carol pushed her sleeve up to show me, and Dev did the same, and there they were: two small heart outlines, one on each wrist, as neat as the day I drew them on paper. "We found a man in Blackpool who could copy your line," Dev said. "He said he'd never seen anyone pull a loop that clean without a ruler." I told him I'd had a lot of practice in maths.
I wrote my name on my own badge in capitals, then stopped and added Miss Wardle underneath, the name Mr Pryce used when he called the register, just to see whether anyone would laugh. Nobody did. Across the hall Dev caught my eye and mouthed thanks, and I realised he meant the hearts, not the badge.
