Owl and roses in black and grey realism
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo shows a close-up owl with a detailed eye and feathered face on the left, overlapping two open roses on the right and lower area. The linework is soft and the shading is smooth, with fine feather texture and layered petals creating depth. The image is in black and grey only, with the arm filling most of the frame against a dark background.

Nobody in the Crescent Ballroom above the bus station had ever seen a woman come through those doors so late and so certain of herself.

She went straight past the dance floor to the back wall, where old Ernest Pilling sat beneath the stuffed barn owl that had been nailed up there since before the war. Ernest had kept that bird through three landladies and a burst pipe, and he swore it blinked whenever a girl in red shoes told a lie. Dolly held the roses out to him. 'For the owl,' she said. 'He's been watching you for thirty years and you've never once asked him to dance.' Ernest laughed so hard he slopped his pint down his waistcoat, and the whole hall turned round to see what the fuss was.
Here's the turn, mind. The roses weren't really for the owl at all. They were for the wee grey lad who'd been sitting on the stool beside Ernest all evening, too shy to ask Dolly for a waltz, and who now stood up with his cap twisted in his hands. Nobody remembers who asked first. But the next Saturday there was a jam jar of roses on the sill beneath that owl, and the band played slow, and the owl kept its round eyes on the pair of them until the lights went out.
