Two cartoon cats and daisies on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A larger cat sits with a smaller kitten tucked in front of her, both drawn with bold outlines and soft shading inside an ornate grey scrollwork frame. Two pink daisies flank the design, and a teal wash fills the background behind the cats. A banner with the word Darling in black script runs along the bottom of the piece.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Madame Oriel Snowe did not hurry, and she had not hurried since the winter the Thames rose over the kerb. So when the kitten came tumbling off the banister with a pink ribbon knotted at one ear, Oriel lowered her chin and waited for the commotion to finish. Juniper had arrived in a hatbox three springs ago, all elbows and opinions, and had been climbing things ever since: curtains first, then the good chandelier, then the lid of the piano, which had not forgiven her.

Downstairs, Mr Penhale kept the florist's shop and left a bucket of daisies on the step every Thursday, because Juniper had once knocked his display into the gutter and he felt terribly sorry about it. Oriel had explained that a lady does not accept charity, only tributes. Juniper took this to heart. Each Thursday she trotted down, selected one daisy by its stalk and carried it back up in her teeth, leaving it on the landing like a small white receipt.

This Thursday the shutters were down. A note tucked under the bucket read Closed for the nurse's visit, back soon, and the daisies had gone limp in the drizzle. Juniper sat on the top stair and would not come in. Oriel, who had not descended a staircase at speed in six years, went down one step at a time, rain beading on her whiskers, and lifted the freshest flower from the bucket with great dignity.

She carried it up the stairs the same way, one step at a time, the stalk bitter on her tongue. Juniper met her on the landing, bow askew, eyes enormous. Oriel set the daisy down among the others and straightened the ribbon with one careful paw. "Darling," she said, which was as near as she ever came to saying anything softer, and the kitten pressed her face into her shoulder and purred like a kettle left on.
