Two cats and red flowers on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two cats sit side by side, one partly behind the other, with a red flower and a stem of red leaves winding up from the bottom of the design. The linework is loose and sketched, with grey shading inside the cats and soft red fills on the flowers and leaves. The design fills the forearm from the wrist towards the elbow, with the cats' heads at the top and a tail curling at the base.

Tom Pardoe kept the narrowboat Thrift moored below the lock at Ashby, and the two grey cats came aboard the week the poppies went up along the towpath. Nobody owned them. They sat on the coal box side by side, one a little behind the other, and watched the water as if it owed them money.

Ruth from the lock-keeper's cottage said they were the same cat, split by a wrong word spoken over a cradle, and that the mark on the forehead of the second one was where the word had gone in. Tom didn't believe her. He fed them anyway, and every morning there was a red poppy laid on the hatch step, its stem wound round a single leaf.
In August the river rose after three days of rain and the Thrift broke her mooring. Tom went over the side in the dark with the line in his teeth. The current had him under the lock gate when something caught his collar, and he came up against the timber with a claw in his cheek and two sets of green eyes above him on the beam.
They walked him back along the towpath, one ahead and one behind, and when he reached the hatch the poppy was waiting, fresh, its petals dark in the lamplight. He kept the boat tied up short after that, and never once asked which of them had pulled him out.
