Cartoon creature with flowers on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon creature with large round eyes and pointed ears fills the centre of the design, its body decorated with blue swallows, stars, scrollwork and a ribbon banner. Two pink flowers with yellow centres and green leaves frame it on either side. Bold black outlines and bright, saturated colour give the piece a neo-traditional look, and the subject sits centrally on the lower leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The creature had been sitting in the fish hold since Tuesday, and nobody aboard the Constance Ruth could agree whether it had come over the side at Porthlowen or had been down there all along, under the ice and the wet sacking, watching them with two round eyes like dropped coins. Skipper Abel Carne wanted it off the boat. Tess Moyle, the youngest hand, wanted to know what it ate. Neither of them had an answer, so on Wednesday night she climbed down with her uncle's old ink tin and a sewing needle wrapped in thread.

"Keep still," she told it, and it did, which unsettled her more than any growl would have. She gave it stars along its shoulders, a pair of swallows dipping over one flank, scrollwork curling round its ears like the frost on a wheelhouse window. Across its belly she set a ribbon banner and, because her uncle always said a sailor's mark needs a name, she left the space blank and sat back on her heels. Above her Abel was shouting about the tide. She went up without filling it in.

The nets came up heavy on Thursday, so heavy the winch groaned and the deck tilted. By noon the hold was full of silver and the crew had stopped complaining about anything at all. Abel, hauling boxes past the hatch, stopped dead when the light caught the ribbon. Someone had written a name there in careful capitals: BET. His wife had gone over off the Gannet Head twenty years back, and he had never once said her name aloud on the water.

They brought the Constance Ruth home at dusk with the gulls following in a grey cloud. When the boat was tied up, the creature climbed out onto the bollard, blinked at the harbour lamps and lifted its small blue swallows into the air one by one. Abel watched them go. He did not ask Tess where the name had come from. Next morning the bollard was bare, and the ink on the ribbon had faded to the colour of the sea.
