Cartoon cat and dog in a heart frame
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon cat with a pink bow and a cartoon dog with a red collar sit side by side inside a heart-shaped frame. Pink and purple flowers, a teal and purple bow and a faceted teal gem sit around the bottom and top of the design. Bold outlines, solid colour fills and soft shading on the figures contrast with the blue leather background.

Hettie had been asleep on the velvet cushion in Mrs Pennywhistle's shop window when the brass bell rang and a spaniel-shaped shadow shoved through the door, nose first, dragging a length of pink ribbon he had clearly been told not to touch. She opened one eye. "Put that back," she said. "Where did you find it?"

Rufus had come into the town on a fishing boat, and nobody had ever asked him where he meant to go. He dropped the ribbon at her paws and said he had found it in the harbour, which was a lie, because he had lifted it from the lid of a jewellery box kept by the postmistress. Hettie pushed it back with one claw. "You return things to the people who miss them. That is the first rule of Gull Lane."
They argued for the rest of the week, about the tide tables, the gulls, and the fat grey pigeon who thought he owned the bench. Rufus returned the ribbon, then a broken teapot lid from the gutter, then a tin of sardines he swore was a gift. Each time Hettie found a reason to be unimpressed, and each time she sat a little nearer to him on the warm step outside the bakery.
On the night of the regatta the lamps came on along the quay, and a faceted green-blue stone turned up on the windowsill of the bakery, catching the light like the sea in a storm lantern. Rufus had not stolen it. He had been polishing it on his own red collar for three days. Hettie looked at the stone, then at him, and said nothing at all, which the whole lane agreed was the most romantic thing a cat had ever done. She lay down beside him with her bow slightly crooked and let the pigeon think what he liked.
