By the third dry season the flat rock above the Ketto waterhole had become a matter of principle for Tobiah. He claimed the north end every evening, his mane arranged like a grievance, and watched his cousin Ines pad up the slope with her chin high, pretending the view belonged to her. Neither had said a kind word since the rains failed. The river had shrunk to a brown thread, and the zebra who used to come down at dusk now went round by the ridge instead.

One evening a heat storm rolled in off the plain, smelling of iron and burnt grass. Dust hid the acacias and the rock shook with thunder that was not quite rain. Ines came up the slope fast, too fast, and found Tobiah already there, blinking into the wind. Neither of them moved away. They sat with their shoulders touching and their heads turned out against the grit, and after a while Tobiah leaned his cheek down onto the top of her head, just to keep the dust off her ears, he said afterwards, though nobody had asked.

The rain came in the night after all, heavy and sweet, and by morning the waterhole was full to its stony lip. The zebra came back down the slope in a long grey line. Tobiah and Ines were still on the rock, asleep, one head resting against the other, and the low sun threw their shadows out across the water into a single soft shape, wide at the top and pointed at the bottom, the way the zebra always said it looked when the river was full.
