Two colour flame emblems on upper arms

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The top panel shows a stylised emblem with a teal-to-green gradient fill, black flame-like strokes on the upper right, a black tail, and three short black dashes below. The bottom panel shows a similar flame emblem in red and orange with soft gradient shading and a dark outline, placed over the shoulder. Both use bold, flat outlines with smooth colour blending against lightly freckled skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The road out of Calder Wells runs straight for ninety miles before it bends, and the only thing that stops a man on it is the flare tower at Sixteen Mile. I was nineteen the summer Teodor left me the tower keys and a tin of paint, with orders to keep the crest on the gate fresh, or the fuel convoys would stop trusting our word on water.

Each spring we repainted it: a bird's wing in green where the sky meets the salt, flames licking up its back in long black strokes, and a tail that dropped toward the ground like a cut rope. Teodor always said the three short dashes underneath were the count of rain days, and that he had never once got the count right. I painted them anyway, one for each year since the flood.

The night the dust came in from the east, two convoy drivers were lost somewhere past the bend, and I climbed the tower with red paint still tacky on my hands. I poured the red over the lamp housing so the flame would burn orange through the grit, then held the shutter open until my arms shook.

The trucks came in at dawn, headlights smeared brown, following the colour to the gate. Nobody thanked me. The first driver down simply looked at the green wing on the post, then at my red hands, and said the emblem had saved more men than the water ever had. I still don't know if that was true, but I kept the paint.
