Rainbow flame and water emblem on forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stylised emblem combining a flame at the top with a swirl and a blue wave at the base sits on the forearm. The design uses bold outlines with soft, blended shading that moves from red and orange through yellow and green into blue. The tattoo is centred on the forearm against a plain pale skin tone and a grey fabric background.

Mind the kettle, Jessie, it has been on since the milk boat came in, and I'll not have it boil dry while I'm talking. Now, Old Tom Ashby had two loves in Saltmere, and both of them were stubborn. The first was his forge at the top of Clay Lane, where the hammer rang from six until the light went. The second was the harbour below, where the tide came in grey and patient every evening and took back whatever it pleased.

Edie used to say he'd either burn the town down or drown in it, and she didn't much care which. So when the herring fleet went out one February and the fog came down thick as wet wool, Tom did the only thing he knew. He lit the forge hotter than it had ever been, hammered a copper lamp-dish into shape, and fitted it with a panel of blue glass he'd been saving for nothing in particular. He carried the lamp down to the slipway, held it over the water, and waited. Every time the sea hissed against the stones, he tipped the dish so the light rolled out in a swirl across the waves.
The Pell boy rowed in at midnight, following that strange flame-and-water shine as though it had been painted on the dark for him. He came up the slipway with his hands raw and his mouth shut tight, and said nothing at all, which in Saltmere was the highest praise going.
Tom kept the lamp. Long after the forge went cold, Edie found him sitting on the wall, watching the blue light slide over the water and the red glow sit steady in the lamp's heart, and she said that he looked, for once in his life, exactly where he belonged. Now drink your tea, the pair of you, before it goes cold.
