A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cartographer of Vell had lost his north the winter his wife went over the mountains to sell salt, and by spring he could no longer tell which way the river ran. Every morning he drew the same two roses on the back of his ledgers, one with eight points and one with four, and every morning the points pulled in different directions, so that the lines he made never agreed with each other.

His daughter Ottilie, who was nine and had no patience for grown men's sorrows, took the pen from him one evening and drew a ring around the larger rose. She coloured the points in rust and brown, the way the leaves turned on the hill behind the mill. Then she coloured the ring in red, and then in green, because she said north should have a border that could be trusted. When she finished, she held the page to the lamp and said, the wind does not care what you call it, Father, it only needs a place to stand.

He went out before dawn with the page folded in his coat. At the crossroads by the ferry, he set it flat on a stone, turned the star until the points lay true against the hills, and walked toward the blue shadow of the mountains with the sun at his left shoulder. His wife was at the far pass, where the salt traders camp, sitting on a sack and waiting for the fog to lift. He did not know yet that she had drawn the same rose on her own sleeve, though it had long since faded to a smudge.
