The raven had sat on the same bough of the dead ash since before the colliery sank its second shaft, and Nell Dodds had long stopped telling her mother it was an omen. Her mother still crossed herself every time she passed under it on the way to the wash-house.

Tonight the bird was not on the ash. It sat lower, on the gutter of the lamp-room, its head turned towards the winding gear as if it had heard the cage stop short. Nell stood at the gate with her shawl pulled tight and counted the men coming up in the lamp light. Twelve, thirteen. Her brother Jack was always the last off the cage because he liked to check the props himself.

The cage came up with only the crew from the east face, and Jack was not among them. A deputy ran past her towards the pithead office, and the raven lifted off the gutter, flew low over the beck and settled in the old tree, where it looked back at her with one bright eye.

She understood then that it had never been watching the shaft but the footpath to the bank, where Jack always cut through. She followed the bird. Jack was sitting in the ditch beneath the tree, grey with dust, his cap in his hands, and he was laughing at her for running. The raven shook out its feathers and went quiet on its branch, as if it had only been keeping an eye on him.
