Two diamonds on an ankle

Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two faceted diamonds are tattooed on the ankle and top of the foot, one smaller and set above and to the left of the larger one. The gems are drawn with dark outlines, pale highlights and soft grey shading that gives them depth. The skin is shown against a near-black background with a black strappy shoe at the lower edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pell had walked the spoil heaps since the thaw, turning over grey gravel with a stick, and by the third week the village had stopped asking him what he was looking for. His mother said diamonds were only lumps of coal that had been squeezed until they forgot themselves. The schoolmaster said the same thing with more Latin. Pell said nothing, because his grandfather had once come home from the far pits with a stone in his cheek and a story about a fox that spoke, and nobody had believed either of them.

On the nineteenth day the stick knocked against something that rang. It was small, the size of a barley grain, and it threw the light back at him so sharply that he sat down on the wet stones. He carried it to the old cutter in the lane, who held it to the window and said nothing for a long time. Then he said there was a bigger one, that it had to come out of the mountain by the same road, and that the mountain would want something back.

Pell went up at dusk with a lantern and a loaf. He left the loaf at the mouth of the shaft, as his grandfather had told him to, and went down. Below, the second stone waited in the rock like an eye that had been open for a thousand years. He took it, and the mountain let him, and he climbed out into the cold with his hands bleeding and the stone sewn into the lining of his coat.

The cutter set both stones in a cold window. The small one he gave to his sister. The large one he kept, though he never wore it, and when people asked why, he said only that a thing that had cost a mountain should stay on the mountain's side of the road. Then he went back to the heaps to look for the next one.
