Butterfly with red flowers on the hand
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A large butterfly sits across the back of the hand, its wings filled with solid black ink and decorated with red flower motifs edged in green. A thin black outline of a map runs up the forearm and wrist. The black areas are dense and even, and the colour is kept to the flowers and small accents on the wings against the pale skin and grey background.

The drawing office above the Carrick Mill post office smelled of ink and paraffin, and on the last Tuesday of October in 1953 Ada Pell was told to keep her elbows off the survey sheets. Mr Lowry had pinned a black butterfly above the light table, a gift from his brother in Kendal who collected such things. Its wings were dark as wet slate, edged with the red of cut flowers, and Mr Lowry said it kept the draughtsmen honest.

Ada noticed the hindwing lifting. Each morning the pin had worked a little looser, and by Thursday the specimen sat crooked, one wing fanned toward the window as if it wanted out. She bought a tin of soft wax from the chemist and dabbed the pin, and when she lifted the glass the butterfly weighed next to nothing, the way an empty envelope does.
Mr Lowry found her with the case open. He did not shout. He sat on the stool heavily and told her about the summer of 1921, when his father had drawn a footpath across the moor that no council had ever approved. It ran from the mill to a cottage where two sisters grew peonies, and the sisters had used it for sixty years before anyone thought to ask whose it was. He reached past her and turned the glass over.
On the card beneath, someone had traced a thin pencil line from the mill to the cottage and written a date in a hand Ada did not know. Beneath the wings, where the pin had been, the line carried on past the edge of the card and out through the crack in the window frame, down toward the moor road.
