Two dove designs with spread wings
Black and grey · Flash
Two graphite pencil drawings of doves with wings fully spread, one viewed from the front and one in profile. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft shading across the feathers and bodies. The drawings are in black and grey on a plain white background, stacked one above the other.

Dear Tom, the pass closed on Tuesday and it has not reopened, so you will have to forgive the state of this paper. I am writing on the back of the inn ledger because the good stationery went to the Ashworths for their christening. Father says the snow will hold until Lady Day, and I believe him, because the drifts are higher than the byre door now.

Yesterday, when I went out to break the ice on the trough, I found two doves on the kitchen step. They were not frightened of me. One had its wings thrown wide as if it meant to catch the whole valley, and the other sat beside it, pale and perfectly still, its feathers fluffed against the cold. I had never seen doves this far up. Mrs Cullen says they are carriers, that someone sends them with news, but I told her the only news up here is the price of salt.
I fed them crumbs from the morning bread and left the scullery door ajar. By nightfall the winged one had gone, and the other was sitting on the sill of the back room where the lost traveller slept. In the morning there was a small roll of paper tied with red thread beneath its foot, addressed in a hand I did not know: To whoever keeps the light. The traveller would not say what it meant, only that the bird had come for her.
I have kept the note in my apron pocket. The dove is still here, watching the road. I think it is waiting for the other one to come back over the ridge, and so, I confess, am I. Write soon, if the post can find us.
