Pencil sketch of a spread-winged griffin
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a griffin-like creature with its wings fully spread, head turned to the left and talons raised. The linework is loose and sketchy, with feathers shaded in light hatching and a long tail that curls into spirals at the bottom. The drawing is in greys on a pale cream background and is composed as a single centred figure.

The griffin came down over the garden wall at the hour the bees go home, folding itself out of the sky with its wings thrown wide. Mrs Tully did not drop her trowel. She had buried two husbands and a goat in that ground and did not hurry for anything with feathers.

It held up one forefoot, talon curled like a hook, then turned its head so she could see the bramble wound tight around its tail. The thorns had caught the long spirals and knotted them, and the creature had been dragging them through the hedgerows since noon. "You'll want gloves," Mrs Tully said, and fetched her grandfather's leather pair from the potting shed.
She worked for an hour in the going light, unwinding one loop at a time while the griffin kept perfectly still, which her mother had always said was the first sign of good manners in any creature. When the last thorn came free, the beast shook out its wings and the whole kitchen garden smelled of cut grass and rain. It bent down, took a single pinch of her runner beans in its beak as if paying a toll, and rose off the wall.
That autumn the blackbirds stayed on her lawn all winter and the apples dropped straight into the grass without a bruise. Each spring a faint spiral of bare, pale earth showed on the path where the tail had dragged, and she left it unweeded, because that was the rent, and she had always been a woman who paid what she owed.
