Two flowers and swirling stems on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two large flowers with soft, wash-like shading that fades from dark centres to pale grey petal edges. Long dark stems curve down the upper arm, with fine dotted swirls beside them. The design sits across the shoulder and upper arm on a light-skinned subject wearing a white top, and the image is in black and grey ink only.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Pell had been grinding Indian ink since before the frost came down off the beeches, and by the second week of November her fingers were the colour of it. The magnolia had arrived in a crate from the Bristol docks, wrapped in sacking, its two buds shut tight like fists. Nobody in Hollin Cross had grown one before. The vicar's wife wanted it drawn for the glasshouse ledger, and Ada was the only one in the parish who could make ink stay where it was put.

She worked at the kitchen table by the window that looked onto the wood's edge, where the path went in between two split oaks and did not come out again for most people. Ink on wet paper spreads like weather. She learned to let the dark sink into the centre of each petal and lift it outward toward the rim, so the flower seemed to be fading while it stayed sharp in front of her. The stems she drew with a single hair brush, and because they looked bare, she flicked tiny dots along them the way the frost had lain on the bracken that morning.

The vicar's wife came on the Thursday and held the paper up to the lamp. 'It's too sad,' she said. 'Paint it open.'

Ada said nothing. She had already seen what the drawing was: a flower that had opened once and was letting go, its edges gone to smoke. She slid the sheet into the ledger without argument and walked out to the split oaks, where a single bloom from the crate lay in the leaf litter, gone the same grey as her paper. She pressed it between two blank pages and closed the book on it.
