Black and grey realism tattoo of two sunflowers with leaves across a person's upper back, near the shoulder blade.

Sunflowers across the upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two large sunflowers with a smaller bloom and leaves overlap across the upper back, with the largest flower near the shoulder blade. The petals and seed heads are rendered with fine linework and soft grey shading that gives them depth and a lifelike look. The image is entirely black and grey, with the bare skin and dark hair framing the design.

Dear Tom,

The seed heads have gone to a spiral this year, just as you said they would, each seed set in its own little turn like the grooves on a gramophone record. I counted the curves on the one by the gate: thirty-four one way, fifty-five the other. You would have had it worked out before I got the kettle on.

Mum's sunflowers are taller than the shed now. The first one, the one we planted in the cracked bucket because we ran out of soil, has bent its head clean over the path so it faces the back door. Dad used to say they follow the sun from morning to dusk, then swing back east overnight to wait for it. I checked at six this morning and he was right, or the flower was, and it's nobody's business but its own.

I went through the boxes in the loft on Sunday. Under the Christmas lights I found your envelope of Mum's seeds, the paper gone soft and brown, labelled in her hand: Russian Giant, do not let the mice have these. I've sown half of them in the greenhouse and four came up. I'd like you to come and see the biggest one before the frost, before it drops its heavy head and the goldfinches have the lot.

Ring me if you'd rather not. If you do come, bring the good secateurs and nothing else you'd feel you needed to explain.

Love, Ruth
