Their mother had stitched the heart onto the bodice the winter the twins were born, saying a body that shared one heart could not stay angry for long. It was a kind lie. For thirty years the two of them had hissed at each other across the cabbages, each certain the other was pricing the red chillies wrong, until the spring the river rose over the lower lanes and took half the stock.

Standing in brown water to their knees, the heads stopped arguing long enough to count what was left. Eleven melons, a sack of chillies gone soft at the stalks, and a crock of brine that would not keep. A boy from the mill came splashing up with a handcart and offered to take the lot for nothing if they would only stop squabbling where his mother could hear.

They sold the eleven that afternoon for the price of a single fruit, split each one with a knife held in four hands, and walked home dry. Nobody in the square ever learned which head had named the price. That night, the story goes, the heart on the bodice beat a little faster, and neither head mentioned it.
