Woman with brushes, skull and eye design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A black linework drawing of a woman with flowers and leaves in her hair, one hand raised near her face. Below her, a fan of paintbrushes and beaded strands frame a skull with a central eye within a triangle, with a small ribbon at the base. The design uses fine and bold outlines with stippled shading and no grey wash, and the composition is symmetrical and centred on a single vertical line.

Mrs Pell had given the attic room to the painter on condition that he kept his brushes off the landing. By October the top floor smelled of linseed and salt, and the brushes had spread across every sill like the spokes of a wheel. Idris did not remember leaving them there. He remembered only the jaw a fisherman had dragged up from the shingle at Cold Harbour, and how he had wanted to paint it open, so the sea could see inside.

He worked through the nights with the window cracked. Each morning the brushes had moved. The bristles faced the same way, sorted by length, the finest tips turned towards the skull. On the fourth morning a ribbon lay looped at the base of the jaw, faded blue and knotted the way his mother used to tie parcels for the post. He told himself Mrs Pell had been tidying. Mrs Pell had been dead since August, and he had paid her nephew for the room.
On the last night he painted the eye in the brow, a single open lid inside a triangle. When the ink dried, a gull's shadow crossed the glass and stopped. Below, the tide was turning. He heard the stairs creak, slow and deliberate, then a soft tap at the door, then the small sound of brushes being lifted one by one from the sill, as if someone were counting them.
In the morning the room held only the easel, the skull and a single brush laid across the edge of the board, its handle wrapped in the same faded blue ribbon. He did not touch it. He signed the corner, capped the tubes and left the window open for the sea.
