The envelopes came through the sorting office at Halifax without stamps, three of them, addressed in pencil to Dot, 9 Sowerby Row, care of the Fleece. Ray Garside turned them over twice at the frank desk before he let them go into his bag.

Each one held a single heart drawn in ink, pressed hard and then lightened where the nib had skipped. The first was small, the second a shade bigger and leaning towards the first as if whispering, the third the largest and sitting low, like it had been dropped and didn't mind. There was no name inside, no message, only the hearts.
Dot had been a widow for four winters, and the landlord at the Fleece swore she never got post at all. So Ray pedalled round himself after his last collection, wind tugging at his cap, and found her on the front step in her slippers, arms folded against the cold. She took the envelopes without looking at the outside and tipped them open. Then she laughed until she had to sit down on the step.
"Our Eddie," she said, wiping her eyes with the heel of her hand. "Forty years he courted me with a spelling dictionary and not one word of it right. Now he's gone and drawn me instead."
Ray rode home the long way, past the last four letterboxes he still had to clear, and thought about the dresser in her front room, where she had propped the three hearts against the clock, one above the other, as if they were waiting for the next post.
