Two horse heads in a wreath on a hand

Traditional · Hand · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two brown horse heads overlapping, with dark manes and white-eyed expressions, set in front of a red circle that suggests a sun. A ring of green leaves with red accents and a yellow five-petalled flower sits at the base of the design. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills in red, yellow, green and brown give it a classic traditional look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The paraffin ran short at Scarrow Head the same week the fog came in off the Minch, so Nell Ashby harnessed the two brown mares before it was light and walked them up the cliff path with the cart rattling behind. Her husband had gone down with the fever in October and not come back up. The mares knew the road better than she did.

Bess went in front with her head low, as she always did in fog, and the older mare, Tallow, kept her nose at Bess's shoulder so the pair moved like one animal. Their manes were dark and heavy with wet. Nell could see the white rims of their eyes in the murk, and the red sun, which had gone down an hour before, still showed as a smear above the sea like a coin pressed into clay. The wheels found every rut they had found for eleven winters.

At the top the wind took the match from her fingers twice. She stood with the empty can and her cold hands and felt the path go out from under her thinking. Then the mares turned, both at once, and stood between her and the cliff edge with their heads close together, facing the grey where the light should have been. Nell understood then that they had been walking her to the place she could not see.

She lit the lamp with the last dry match she had kept in her collar. The beam swung out over the water and the boats below turned for home. When she came back down the path an hour later, the mares had gone ahead of her, two dark shapes with their heads together, and the lamp behind them burned steadily, the one bright thing left on the headland.
