Unicorn and lotus flowers on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A unicorn head in profile wears a crystal headpiece and a pendant on a chain, with its mane flowing across the design. Red lotus flowers and a large red mandala sit behind and around the head, with the horse's face shaded in greys and browns. Strong red and pink ink is combined with black and grey outlining and shading, and the design fills the thigh from top to bottom.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara Holloway was to be wed at Michaelmas, and the whole of Carrow Dale had sewn for her since midsummer. Her mother pinned a headpiece of river glass and pearl above her brow, the way the old women had done for their own daughters, and before the bells had rung a white horse came up the lane from the ford with a spiral horn and stood at the gate as though it had been invited.

Nobody spoke. The horse wore a silver chain across its cheek with a pale stone swinging from it, and its mane lay over its neck like poured milk. Old Tam Reeve, who had bought every bad horse in the county, swore the beast was lame, but it walked the path with its head high and favoured no leg. It went straight to Mara, lowered its head, and breathed on her cold hands until the feeling came back into them.

"The dale owes the ford a bride every seven years," it said, in a voice like a bell dropped into a well. "You have been promised to Oswin Vane for three years, and nobody asked you once." Mara looked at the stone on the chain and then at the hills, and she laughed, because it was true. She took the river glass from her hair, set it in the horse's mane, and asked it to carry her to the water.

They were married at the ford instead, with Oswin standing knee deep and holding his boots, and the horse stood in the shallows as witness. The lanterns went out one by one. By morning there were red flowers drifting in the reeds where nobody had planted anything, and Mara's headpiece hung from a willow on the far bank, where it stayed for as long as the dale remembered her name.
