Two ice cream designs on an upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
Two separate tattoos sit side by side on the skin. The left one shows a mint green swirled cone with stitched seams and a patchwork lower section in yellow, pink, and green. The right one shows a black swirled topping with yellow highlights and cross-shaped marks, above a purple base with a small black spider-like figure and radiating lines. Both use bold black outlines and solid fills, with colour dominating the left design and black shading the right.

The frost had got into the churn again, so Mother Hale sent her son Tobias out to the lean-to with a lantern and a bucket of salt. Behind the cider barrels, propped on a sack of turnips, sat the stitched woman. Nobody at Lowfold Farm had ever seen her walk. She was pieced together from the patched coats of three shepherds who had gone up the fell in a snowstorm and never come down, and her hair was a fleece of black wool that curled the way bracken does in the rain.

Tobias set the salt down and asked what she wanted. She told him the cream came from the one cow that still gave in winter, and that the widow Cass had left a black-topped cone on the step the night before, with two sewn crosses for eyes so she could watch the door. Every winter, she said, something must be kept and something must be paid. Grey Nan, the spider in the rafters, had spun her web across the milk pail, and the web would not lift until a bargain was struck.
Tobias gave her his red scarf, the one his father had knitted before the fever. The stitched woman took it without a word and wound it round the bucket handle. In return she unpicked a mint-green swirl from her own crown, a cone so cold it squeaked, and pressed it into his hands. It tasted of snow and of the bread his mother baked on Sundays.
By the thaw the lean-to was empty except for the sacking and a faint smell of cream. The hens were laying again, and the widow Cass's door stood open with a black cone set on the sill, its crosses gone. Tobias never told his mother where the scarf went, and she never asked why the milk pail was clean.
