Cupcake with skull and crossed shovels
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A bold cupcake sits at the centre, with pink frosting swirled above purple wrappers and a red apple with a skull on top. Two crossed shovels with teal handles frame the cupcake, and a pale orange circle sits behind it. Thick black outlines and flat areas of solid colour give it a classic traditional look, set against plain skin.

The snow came over Tarrow Pass a month early that year, and the village sent for Maud Keld because she owned the only two spades that still bit into frozen ground. She carried them up the goat track crossed on her back like oars, and at the top she found a grave already opened, dug by someone who had given up halfway.

The dead man was Hob Penrose, a carter who had cheated the whole valley with short weights and sweet talk. His widow had left a cupcake on the lid of the coffin, its purple paper cases stacked on a tin plate and the frosting piped pink and high as a bishop's hat. Nobody in Tarrow baked anything with frosting. Yet there it sat, and on top of the swirl was a red apple with a little skull pressed into its skin, grinning the way apples grin before they rot.
Maud ate none of it. She stood the shovels in the snow and sang the old dig song under her breath, the one that counts the spadefuls, and at forty she stopped, because the apple had rolled off the plate and split on a stone. Inside was no seed, only a folded paper in a neat hand: Maud, you owe me a dig. It was signed with the name of her own sister, dead thirty winters, who had always said she wanted to lie where the wind comes clean.
Maud dug to forty-one. Then she sat on the rim beside the cupcake and ate it after all, paper case and all, and let the valley wait for its carter. Hob went down at dusk. The sister got a flat stone carved with a cupcake and two crossed spades, and the pass stayed quiet for a hundred years.
