Dear Mags, you'll think I've lost my wits, but the owl has come back to the yard again. It sits on the rain barrel behind the bakehouse every morning at half four, just as the first trays go into the oven and the flour dust hangs gold under the lamp. Teal as a kingfisher's back, with a cream waistcoat speckled like a thrush's egg, and those eyes, Mags. Each one ringed in white dots like someone has stitched pearls round it, with yellow rims that catch the light.

I've been feeding it crusts, which Dad would have had my hide for, but he's gone to Leeds about the new mill and it's only me and Tomasz on the early shift. Tomasz says it's a tawny, but tawnies don't come into town, and this one never hoots. It just watches the back door as though it's waiting on a loaf that's late.

Yesterday I left the gate open and put out a single bun, the burnt-bottomed one nobody wants. This morning the bun was gone, and in its place on the step was a brass button the size of a farthing, with an anchor stamped on it. Tomasz swears he's never owned a coat with brass buttons. I've put it in the till drawer with the spare keys.

I'm not writing to ask what to do. I'm writing because I've started leaving the gate open on purpose, and the bread is rising better than it ever has. Come home at Easter and see for yourself. Bring your good scissors. Love, Nell.
