Portrait of a man with moustache on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A tattoo of a man's head and shoulders, shown facing forward with dark swept-back hair, a moustache and blue eyes. He wears a dark red jacket over a white shirt and a red tie. The portrait uses smooth shading for the skin and hair, with flat red and black areas for the clothing, and sits centred on a pale leg with some tattoo work visible at the edges.

The sale barn at Llanfach smelled of diesel and wet straw, and Desmond Vane had refused to take off his jacket. It was the dark red one, the good one, buttoned over a white shirt with a tie knotted so tightly it looked like a grievance. Gwyneth from the regional studio had driven him out for the winter livestock segment, and now she watched him stand in the middle of the ring while the wind tried and failed to disturb his hair.

The farmer, Alun Pritchard, leaned on the rail with a collie at his boots. 'You'll want to talk to the heifer,' he said. 'She's the one who won the county.' Desmond nodded gravely at the animal, who regarded him with the same flat patience she gave the auctioneer. He cleared his throat, lifted the clipboard, and began reading prices in the voice that had once made the nine o'clock news sound like a rumour worth believing.

Halfway through the figures the generator cut out, and the lights dropped to the grey daylight leaking through the high windows. Nobody moved. Gwyneth reached for the cue cards, but Desmond only folded them, tucked them into his breast pocket, and carried on from memory: the price per head, the weight of each lot, the name of every buyer. Alun counted them off on his fingers. When the auctioneer finally called the heifer's lot, the barn went quiet enough to hear the hay settle.

Desmond stepped down, brushed a loose thread from his sleeve, and handed Alun the clipboard. 'Sold at a record,' he said. 'I think that's the end of the bulletin.' Gwyneth laughed, the generator coughed back into life, and somewhere behind the pens the heifer lowed as if she had followed every word.
