Two mermaids in a circle with koi on a back

Back · Mixed · Photo

Two mermaids face each other inside a large circular composition, one with a teal and green scaled tail and the other with a darker grey tail. An infinity symbol sits between their faces, with red koi fish and skeletal fish in the surrounding water and swirling wave lines. The shading is soft and smooth in grey, with the colour concentrated in the tails, fish and water.

Ada, the engine at Wheal Hope has been stopped since Tuesday and the water is climbing the old shaft again. Father says it will reach the adit by Michaelmas, and the men are saying the mermaids will have the place back. I went up the path with the lamp yesterday and stood at the rail above the wheelpit. The surface has gone flat and green, and under it the red fish from the travelling man's crate are still going round in their circle, as if they have not been told the sea is not coming.

You remember the spoil heap behind the chapel, where we broke the grey slate for the path. Mr Hosking showed me this week how the shale splits open to show fish bones, dozens of them laid out like the ribs of a fan, every one with its little spine. He says they were swimming before the hills were hills. I put one in my apron pocket and it has been knocking against my hip all day, like it wants to be let out.

On the wet wall of the engine house, where you drew the figure of eight with your thumb the summer you left, the moss has grown back over it. I drew it again with a bit of chalk, and then I could not stop, round and round, until it was only a loop with no start and no end, just as you said it was meant to be. I am writing this at the table with the lamp turned low so Mam will not come down and find me up.

Come home before the water reaches the top. If the carrier is too dear, send word and I will tie a red thread to the rail above the wheelpit, so you know which way to look when you come over the hill. Your loving sister, Nell.
