Two molar teeth on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two molar teeth side by side, with small numerals above each one. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading that gives the teeth some depth and volume. The skin is shown from the side with a plain bedroom backdrop, and the tattoo is the clear focus of the frame.

Mrs Okonedo's flat on the eleventh floor smelled of Dettol and burnt toast, and the tin on her windowsill had sat there since the lift broke in March. Nobody on the estate knew what was inside it except her grandson, Tomasz, who had been sent up with the shopping and told in no uncertain terms not to touch it.

He touched it anyway. Two molars rolled onto the lino, grey at the roots, one with a filling gone black at the crown. Taped to the lid was a scrap of paper with 12 and 6 written on it in biro. He knew his nan had spent thirty years sterilising instruments at the hospital up the road and had never once talked about the work. He had assumed the numbers were shift patterns, or bus fares, or the date of something sad.
When she came back from the bath with her hair wrapped in a towel, he held the teeth out on his palm like evidence. She didn't look ashamed. She sat down heavily on the arm of the settee and told him that 12 was the upper left and 6 the lower right, and that they were the two she had lost on the same February night in 1979, the year her husband left, when she bit down on a bag of barley sugar and felt something give. She had kept them because they were the only part of that year that had ever been properly hers.
Tomasz turned the smaller one over in his fingers. "So what do you want them for?" he asked. She laughed for the first time that week, a short bark, and said some things were only worth carrying if you could still chew with them, and told him to put the kettle on.
