Two owls on a branch design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of two large owls perched together on a gnarled branch, with one owl in front of the other and both staring forward with wide eyes. The feathers are rendered with detailed hatching and soft shading, and sketched leaves and twisted wood frame the birds. The drawing is monochrome, with the composition filling a tall portrait sheet.

Harrow Mill had been shut for three winters when the Pryce brothers came up the lane with a handcart and a dispute about a boundary wall. Nobody in the valley could say who had planted the oak that leaned over the mill race, only that it had grown crooked, its limbs twisting back on themselves as if it had tried to walk away and thought better of it. Two owls kept it. The big one sat on the lowest bough with its ear tufts raised, and the smaller one sat in front of it, pressed close, as if to block the wind.

Ada Pryce, who had come to fetch her brother home, stood under them with her hands in her coat and counted. She counted everything in those days, the sacks, the nails, the days since the letter from the solicitor. The owls did not blink. They stared at her with the same flat, offended patience the magistrate had shown in June, and she found herself saying, "I know. I know it's not mine either."

Her brother Tom came out of the mill with wet sleeves and a rusted hinge in his fist. He had been arguing with their father's ghost all afternoon, he said, and the ghost had won. They had a wall to pull down and a deed to burn, and he wanted her to hold the lantern while he did it.

They did it at dusk. Ada held the light up to the oak and the owls turned their heads together, slowly, and watched the two of them go off along the race without a word. In the morning the wall was gone and the bough was empty, but two pale feathers were caught in the bark, one large and one small, laid side by side as neatly as a receipt.
