Beauty and the Beast characters around a rose dome

Colour · Flash

A blue ink line drawing shows Belle and the Beast beside a rose inside a circular glass dome, with Mrs Potts, Chip, Cogsworth and a candlestick figure gathered below. Three birds fly around the top of the dome. The linework is bold and even with light cross-hatching on the rose, and the drawing is shown in one blue ink colour on pale paper.

Nell carried the glass dome up three flights of Sallow Street wrapped in her father's old flannel shirt, the way he had taught her to carry anything that might break. Inside it a red rose hung in still air, and beside it two birds were caught mid-flight on a wire, as they had been for forty years. Mr Albright had not asked her to mend the glass. He had asked her to stop the rose dropping its petals onto the tablecloth like coins.

The carriage clock on the mantel ticked slower when she unwrapped the dome. Her father always said objects keep the time of whoever looks after them, and this one had been wound every Sunday since the Albrights' wedding, though Mrs Albright had been dead since March. A brass candlestick with a crooked arm leaned towards the glass. Someone had polished it that morning, and the wax on its tip was still soft.

She found the crack under the rim with a jeweller's loupe, a hairline running towards the rose like a thread pulled through cloth. Gluing it would take an hour. Instead she sat down, drank the tea the old man had left to go cold, and waited. He came in from the garden with mud on his knees and a single rose in his fist, the same deep red as the one under the glass.

"She'd want that one left alone," he said. "It's the only thing in the house nobody has moved." Nell lifted the dome, slid the fresh bloom in beside the old one, and the seam closed with a sound like a held breath let go. Outside, the birds on the wire lifted off one by one, and the clock on the mantel finally caught up with the day.
