Two owls with watercolour splashes on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
Two owls are shown, one partly outlined in sketchy black linework above and behind a second, fully coloured owl with a brown speckled head and a bright orange eye. The background is loose, watercolour-like washes of teal, orange and pink with drips running down the leg. Colour ink dominates the composition, and the shading is soft and blended.

Marion had been counting the snow on the sill since dawn, and by the time the lamp in the yard guttered she had lost her place twice. The moor road closed at noon. Three lorry drivers and a pair of walkers sat in the back parlour of the Cold Hollow, steaming their boots by the grate, and nobody wanted to talk about the owls.

The owls had kept the barn for as long as anyone could remember. The brown one was freckled like a thrush's egg and had an orange eye that watched the lane the way a tallyman watches a queue. The grey one was never quite there. Her grandfather had sketched it onto the beams in pencil years ago, a ghost of a bird with a wide dark eye, and it had a habit of flickering out whenever a torch swung near. Marion had stopped trying to explain it to guests.
Tomas, a surveyor stuck in the parlour with a flask of cold tea, asked where the grey one had gone. She told him it had left the spring her father died, which was true enough, and he nodded as though that were a reasonable reason for a bird to leave. Later, when the others slept, she carried a lamp out to the barn. The orange-eyed owl blinked at her from the beam and did not move, and the pencil outline beside it stayed stubbornly blank.
Near four the wind dropped. Marion climbed the ladder with a blanket, meaning only to check the roof, and found a single pale feather lying on the straw. Above her the brown owl turned its head towards the empty beam beside it, slow and patient, the way you turn when you have heard something you have been waiting for.
