Three-eyed cat with galaxy eyes on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A three-eyed cat with a fur-textured face sits at the centre of the design, with each eye filled with a starry galaxy pattern. A small glowing orb hangs below the cat, and a cosmic haze of purple, teal and pink surrounds the figure. The shading is smooth and blended, with bold dark outlines and bright highlights, and colour ink dominates the piece.

The cat had three eyes, which was the first thing anyone in Harrow Lane noticed, and the second thing was that it had never once blinked in the nine years Mrs Okonedo had kept it on the windowsill of number twelve. Her grandson Tobias stood on the step with a cardboard box under one arm and a key he was no longer sure he was allowed to use. The middle eye was the one that worried the removal men. It sat above the nose like a lantern, and when the light hit it the glass swirled with specks that looked suspiciously like stars.

He carried the box into the kitchen and set it on the table beside the kettle. The cat stepped out of it without ceremony, shook off a bit of packing paper, and walked straight to the back door as if it had been waiting to be asked. Outside, the garden had gone the colour of a bruise, purple at the hedge and teal above the shed, and a pale pink smear hung over the washing line where there should have been only sky. Toby's gran had always said the cat knew the way home. He had thought she meant the house. He understood now that she had meant the other place, the one the orb on its collar was tugging towards.

He followed it out, because somebody had to, and because the little glowing ball at its throat was humming a note he remembered from the hospital corridor, low and patient. At the bottom of the garden the grass ended and there was nothing but deep, starred dark and the cat sitting at its edge, tail wrapped around its feet, waiting for him to decide.

He went back for the kettle first. Some things were not going anywhere.
