Two paw prints behind the ear

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph shows two solid black paw prints tattooed behind the ear, one above and slightly to the left of the other. Each print has a large central pad and four toe pads, drawn with clean, simple outlines and fully filled black ink. The soft focus background shows dark hair and skin, with the ear, cuff and studs in sharp focus.

Dear Ruth,

The kettle has just clicked off and I am writing this on the back of a rota because the phone has been quiet since midnight, which in Salford on a Thursday means somebody is about to ring. You will remember the grey lurcher we took in from the canal towpath in March, the one with the torn ear and no name. The lads called him Pilot because he walked the wall like he had a route to keep.

Last night the sleet stopped around one and the pavements went white under the streetlamps. I was doing my rounds with the torch, and there, all along Ellesmere Street, were two prints pressed deep in the frost, then a pair beside them, then a pair again. Not Pilot's. His feet are long and narrow. These were round and sure, with a big pad at the heel and four toes fanned out, as if whatever made them had been trotting home with no fear of being late.

I followed them to the corner by the chippy, where they stopped dead. A woman was sitting on the step with a cardboard sign and a flat-coated collie asleep against her shins. Its paws were tucked under it, and when I looked back at the ground the prints ended exactly at the edge of the newspaper bed by her boots. I have never seen such a neat piece of evidence in my life.

I didn't say anything. I bought two teas from the van and gave her one, and she didn't ask me to move on. I'm going to sleep now with the window open a crack, listening for feet.
