She lifted her hand towards his, and he lifted his towards hers, and the air between their fingertips stayed exactly as wide as it had been all winter, neither of them willing to close it and neither willing to pull away.

When she went out in April, the bean she had planted by the gate had climbed the post and thrown a tendril out over the gap, and the curl at its end hung just short of nothing. She left it there. Every year after, she let it grow.
