Island outlines in a row on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a row of separate island outlines drawn in a single dark line, with one larger landmass at the right and smaller shapes spreading to the left. The linework is even and thin with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The photograph is taken at a diagonal angle in black and white, with the tattoo running along the length of the arm and the background falling into soft shadow.

Nobody on Corran Skerry could draw a coastline the way Tamsin Ferrow could, so when the Lowther Survey office wanted the western isles inked for the new chart, they posted the sheets to her cottage in a leather case and waited for them to come back. She worked at the kitchen table with a jam jar holding down the corners. I was nine, sitting on the flagstones with a bowl of porridge, and I thought she was the cleverest person alive.

She drew each island with a single nib and never once lifted it to shade anything. Hard rock, she said, didn't need shadow. The little ones went first, scattered out past the harbour wall like crumbs off a plate, and then the middle ones, and last of all the big island on the right, which was our island, with its bay where the ferry tied up. My brother Callum had already sailed off to the mainland that spring on the Thursday boat, and she drew the sheet as if she were answering a letter he had not yet sent.
When the chart came back from the printers, I asked her why the largest island had a gap in its southern edge. She said the sea had to get in somehow, and that a map was only honest if it admitted where the water went. Then she tapped the gap with her pencil, very lightly, the way you would test a kettle. The ferry horn sounded out in the bay. She folded the sheet along the line of islands and gave it to me to carry down to the boat.
