Two roses in a diamond frame on thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two open roses, one above and one below, with a smaller rose bud and several leaves, all enclosed by overlapping diamond-shaped outlines. The linework is fine and clean, with petals and leaves softened by stippled dotwork shading. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and fills the vertical length of the thigh against a brick wall and dark clothing.

Rain had been coming off the canopies for an hour when Nell Harrow counted the roses again. Forty-two stems in the bucket behind the stall, two open, one bud, the rest shut tight as knuckles. Her father had ruled the price cards on squared paper, drawing each diamond with a set square, and she still could not make the lines sit true on wet card.

Across the aisle the fishmonger hosed down his slab, and the runoff ran under her boots toward the grate. A man in a grey coat bought three roses without haggling, which was rare, and asked if she grew them herself. She said no, that she collected them from a glasshouse outside Wakefield at five each morning, and he nodded as though she had confessed something. He paid in exact change and did not take the bag.
Later, under the cash tin, she found the sheet her father had left years ago. Two roses stacked one above the other, a diamond drawn around them, then a second diamond overlapping the first so the corners made small sharp stars. In the margin he had written: Let the frame hold them. The petals will look after themselves. She borrowed a fine pencil and stippled the nearest petal dot by dot, the way he had taught her, until the rain thinned to nothing and the awning stopped drumming.
She pinned the sheet to the pole as the market lights came on. Water beaded along the diamond lines, catching the bulbs, so the shape held for a moment in the cold air before the drops ran off and the paper went soft at the edges.
