Two roses with dotwork on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two large roses are tattooed along the outer thigh, with the upper bloom partly shaded in black and the lower one showing more grey and lighter highlights. A fine dotwork stipple surrounds the flowers and fills the background, creating a soft gradient behind the petals. The ink is mostly black and grey, and the photo is taken from above on a white surface with dark clothing covering the rest of the leg.

The van gave up at the roundabout outside Stowmarket, so Nell carried the last crate of roses up the back stairs of the Crown herself, one hand under the box and the other clutching a cold cup of tea she had forgotten to put down. Forty Juliet roses, bought for a wedding that started at two. It was twenty past one. The petals on the outer whorls had gone soft and brown at the edges, the way they do after a long drive with the heater on.

Nell laid them out on the trestle under the window and studied them the way her father used to study a wall before he hung a picture on it. The bruised bits were small and scattered, like the spatter from a dropped pen. She took a fine brown pencil from her apron and began to dot. Not colour, just a little shadow pressed in here and there, so the damage sank back into the bloom and the bloom looked deeper than it was. Each dot took a breath. By the time the bride's aunt came up the stairs asking for proof the flowers existed, Nell had done nine bunches and the room smelled of cut stems and pencil shavings.
The aunt looked at the arrangement for a long while and said nothing about the edges. Then she asked whether the darkest roses could go on the top table, where the light from the tall windows would catch the paler ones lower down. Nell said yes. She set the heaviest blooms at the front of the vase, the grey-shadowed ones, and let the light do the rest across the petals, soft and gradual, until the whole display seemed to glow from underneath.
