Lace and flowers on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A leg and bare foot rest on dark fabric, with a tattoo wrapping the lower leg just above the ankle. A pink hibiscus and a pale lavender rose sit inside black lace-like linework, with a grey feather shape rising above them. The flowers use soft colour shading, while the lace is solid black, and the composition is centred on the ankle.

Dear Nell,

The lace came off the last ship from Valparaíso wrapped in tissue paper and smelling of tar, and I have not stopped turning it over since. Mother's hands never made anything so fine, though she would have said that was a fib. This piece is black as a chimney sweep's Sunday and twice as tangled, all little crosses and curling vines, and somebody has stitched a hibiscus into the middle of it, the pink of a boiled sweet. Mr Fenwick swears the hibiscus came from a garden on the quay at Madeira, pressed between two sheets of the same paper, and that the rose is the colour of the sky we had off Cape Horn for three days, grey going lilac at the edges.
I have been ship's steward for eleven months now and I still do not trust the sea to keep its promises. Last Tuesday a feather came aboard tangled in the rigging, long and grey as a gull's wing, and the boy who found it asked if it was a sign. I told him it was a feather. He pinned it above the galley door regardless, and I have not had the heart to take it down.
The lace was in the bottom of Captain Ashdown's trunk, which I was sent to fetch when his wife's letter came. I should not have opened it. But there was a note folded inside, in a looping hand, asking him to come home before the roses went over. I put it back exactly as I found it and went down to the galley and cried into the potato sacks like a fool.
I shall post this from Montevideo. Tell Father the feather is still above the door.
Yours, Tom
