Two small leaf tattoos on fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of an open hand showing two small black tattoos, each a simple leaf shape with a curled stem, placed on adjacent fingers. The leaves are solid black with minimal linework and no visible shading. The background is a dark car interior with green dashboard lights, and the image is slightly soft in focus.

The bay cutting was still in my coat pocket when we pulled off the A-road, wrapped in a square of kitchen roll so it wouldn't bruise. Aunt Maud had pressed it into my palm at the lychgate and said Ted planted that hedge the spring they married, and it was the only thing on the farm that had never once let him down. Take it, she said. Don't let my sister near it.

Carys drove the last stretch because I'd had two glasses of the cheap fizz and she'd had none, which she mentioned twice between the reservoir and the cattle grid. The satnav had given up somewhere near the turn for Ashby, so we went by memory and the green numbers on the dashboard clock, which kept insisting it was later than it was. She asked whether Maud had cried during the vows. I said no, but she'd gone very still, the way a hedge does before the wind gets in it.

At the bungalow I filled a yoghurt pot with water from the kettle, because we had no proper vase and nobody in our family has ever owned one, and stood the cutting in it on the kitchen sill. The light from the street lamp came through the window and laid the leaves flat and shining on the tiles. Carys filled the kettle again without being asked and stood beside me without saying anything, which for her is a kind of sentence.

By August it had put out three new leaves, pale at the tips and dark at the stem. I still haven't told Maud. Some things you keep simply because they are growing, and you do not want to be the one who says so out loud.
