Two wavy lines on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand held up against a pale blue background, showing a very small tattoo of two stacked black wavy lines on the side of one finger. The linework is thin and solid with no shading, and the ink is entirely black on light skin. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with the finger angled diagonally and the other fingers partly visible.

The cistern on Skerry Hollow has been dry since March, and you are the one who walks the mile of scree each morning with two pails and a notebook, because Mr Abernathy at the post office says the mainland pump is not your concern. You do not argue. You count the stones on the path instead, forty-one of them, and you know the number will change if the wind turns.

On the ninth day a boat comes in that should not have come in. A woman steps onto the slipway with a rolled chart under one arm and a thin silver band on her smallest finger, which you notice because you are looking for anything that shines. She asks for the old well-man. You tell her he is dead and you are what is left. She unrolls the chart: a tidal map marked in blue pencil, with two stacked wavy lines in one corner and beside them a note in a careful hand, 'Look under the chapel floor, where the water keeps its own time.'

That night you take a crowbar to the flags beneath the chapel while the stranger holds the lantern and asks nothing. Under the slab the rock is cold and wet, and a seam runs east to west, full of water moving in a slow push and pull. It rises as you watch, then falls, then rises again, the same rhythm as the sea outside the window, two lines of it, one above the other.

By morning both pails are full. You do not write the number down. The woman has gone on the tide, and on the map she left behind you have drawn the sign beside the chapel in your own hand: two waves, one resting on the other, the way water settles once it has found where it is going.
